Simple framing for your prints

3 options to frame your new artwork with ease, plus recommended framing resources in the UK, EU and US.

The most important thing to remember when framing art for your sanctuary: Let the art breathe. We need to create an air gap between the print and the glass to prevent moisture trap and pigment damage.

The second important element is an acid-free backing mount or conservation backing mount that will sit behind the art. This will protect your artwork from getting damaged by slow-release acids in the MDF board at the back of the frame, preventing discolouring over the next 5-10 years.

Below, I’ll share a couple of simple ways you can frame your new art beautifully, and some reputable online framing stores to get all the components you'll need.

Effort level: Easy DIY

1. Box Frame

Hanging your new prints in box frames (or shadow box frames) is the simplest at-home way to frame and elevate your pieces. No mat/window mount required.

You will need:

  • Box frame in the size of your print
Box frames provide built-in space between the artwork and the glass, ensuring that the surface of your artwork never gets damaged by trapped moisture or adhering to the glass, while adding depth and layers to the presentation.

  • Acid free backing mount in the same size as your print/frame
Placed behind the artwork, to prevent damage and discolouration from the frame backing board. Many online framing services allow you to order a box frame with a backing mount already fitted inside.

  • Microfibre cloth
For removing dust from the glass before placing your print inside the frame.

2. Custom window mount or mat

A polished and layered finish, which requires a few extra steps. This is perfect if you have a frame you love which isn’t a box format.

You will need:

  • Frame in the size of your print or the next size up
For a narrower border around your art, choose a frame in the same size as your print. For a thicker border, choose a frame in the next size up from your print (e.g. if your print is A4, choose an A3 frame).

  • Acid-free window mount/mat
Acid-free window mounts add a layer between the artwork and glass, while providing an extra internal border to cover any white paper edges. Most online framers allow you to enter your own window size for a small cost.

  • Acid-free backing mount in the same size as your print/frame
Placed behind the artwork, to prevent damage and discolouration from the frame backing board. Many online frame stores allow you to order a frame with both a window mount and backing mount.

  • Framing hinge tape
You'll only need this if framing a smaller print in a larger frame with a window mount/mat to bridge the gap. The acid-free tape will hold the print in place behind the mat.

  • Microfibre cloth
For removing dust from the glass before placing your print inside the frame.

3. Local Framer

If you don't fancy sourcing all the parts and assembling yourself, then finding a good framer is the best option for you.

You'll have plenty of archival options and finishing touches to choose from, allowing you to get something truly unique if you wish. As well as valuing and supporting a small local business.

The skilled experts will be happy to advise and suggest types of frames and finishes, and the result will always be an impeccably finished, perfectly sealed, safe haven for your art.

Closest sizes in inches to A-sizes

If you live somewhere where Din A ratio frames (A4, A3, A2 etc.) are hard to find, here are some suggestions for the nearest size in inches.

To use standard US frame sizes (e.g., 8x10, 11x14, 16x20) for A-series prints, a window/picture mount (mat) is recommended to bridge the size difference.

Common frame fize matches:

A4

(8.3 x 11.7")

Best fits: 9" x 12", 8.5" x 11" (slightly cropped), or 11" x 14" with mount.

A3

(11.7 x 16.5")

Best fits: 12" x 16" or 12" x 18" (often requires mount).

A2

(16.5 x 23.4")

Best fits: 18" x 24" (with mount) or 16" x 24".

A1

(23.4 x 33.1")

Best fits: 24" x 34" or 24" x 36" frames.
